Steel Work

Modern Material Meets Classic Style

Corten steel (also called 'weathering steel') is a very trendy material to use right now. It's made with alloys that cause its surface to develop a self-protecting rust when exposed to weather. The insulating patina resists corrosion, requires no painting or weather-proofing, and doesn’t compromise structural strength.

The popularity of of using Corten steel are longevity of the material (no rot and highly resistant to damage of any kind), and the natural beauty of rust color that comes with the steel's patina. As such Tryon Creek has invested in a variety of tool sets that allow us to do steel work right in the field.

Firepits

One of the biggest mistakes we’ve seen with fire pit construction is the use of materials that are not suited for high temperatures. For that reason, as well as the design aesthetic, we often recommend Corten Steel firepits. Not only do they look amazing, but the help put off / reflect even more heat once the fire is lit.

Raised Beds & Garden Beds

In terms of it's use for garden beds, steel heats up with very little sunshine and in turn heats up the soil. With the warm soil the plants respond incredibly well and we've seen an increase in the yield of late summer harvests.

Trellis / Green Screens

Trellis fences / green screens are basically living fences that can be as decorative or streamlined as desired. Green screens allow plants to grow and climb up and over them, and are striking additions to any outdoor living space. Once climbing plants are installed and have a few growing seasons to fill in the area, green screens provide a variety of benefits including security, privacy screening, shade and biodiversity.

Corten Steel Retaining Walls

Some landscape designs call for a more modern or contemporary architectural style. Natural stone or rock retaining walls might get the job done, but they may not match the architectural style of the home. Corteen steel retaining walls fit easily into contemporary landscapes and will last many lifetimes.

Lawn & Landscape Edging

Steel edging is the best way to help keep your lawn or landscape clean cut and tailored. The benefits of steel edging (Corten or otherwise) include:

  • Creates a clean separation between garden beds, grass, paths and driveways while staying hidden.
  • Prevents migration of garden materials such as gravel and mulch.
  • Keeps grass from creeping into adjacent beds and paths.
  • Will not rot, crack, or chip in cold weather.
  • Won’t sustain damage from garden maintenance tools.

Bring your landscape vision to life.
